After decades of not knowing anything about King Juan Carlos’ finances, the last few years have brought him nothing but headaches. The first concerned the alleged collection of a commission on his mediation of the AVE to Meccafor which 80 million euros would have been needed; 65 of them were supposedly a gift for his girlfriend Corina. However, he later demanded their return and a harassment case was even opened in the UK. This fact brought the magnifying glass of the anti-corruption prosecution and the Supreme Court to look at him for the first time in June 2020.
Added to this are two new lines of investigation: one, due to the constant undeclared donations from his Mexican friend Allen Sanginés and the use of several “black” cards to be able to dispose of these funds; and the other, for the existence of up to ten million euros hidden in a tax haven located on the island of Jersey.
Finally, the investigation ended up being archived, alleging, in the first place, the inviolability of the emeritus. In order not to go too far, King Juan Carlos presented and paid two regularizations to the Treasury for a total value of more than five million euros lent by friends.
These are striking facts since, “officially he can’t have any money,” as pointed out by the journalist of El Confidencial José María Olmo, who adds that “it is evident that the king still has assets abroad.” However, we still do not know where and how much money he has.
