They almost silently roam the suburbs in the dark and kill all living things who run or fly in front of them – only to then return to their base station, regardless of the corpses that they leave. Fabric from a horror movie? No, reality, unfortunately. Sometimes it is horror, but less science fiction. In this case, dangerous robots are not superhuman machines with a terrible stubborn face and a strange walk. But small boxes, which are very quiet and almost clumsy over the lawn.
And to be honest: the lawn mowers robots cannot do anything if their owners cannot get to the fact that cars with sharp knives not only reduce herbs, but also injure or kill night or twilight animals. Who does nothing for user negligence: manufacturers can. But they could do something about this: namely, the situation in the software that leaves robots at night and at dusk in the position of parking.
Technological paternalism? So, that is from the category “washing machine, which is a penetrant after the program ends until someone gets it out”? Yes, maybe. But if it is also technological paternalism, I think that we need more from this variety.
For example, in road traffic: why did the cars have not been sensors in the doors for a long time that did not allow the driver and front passengers to open them when a person takes a bicycle? Why not the corresponding sensors in trucks that simply prevent the turn when the object is in or in front of the rotary railway? Or in the household: why are there mixers of the kitchen that can be made, although the rotating knife is not protected from the lid of hands? Why is the market flooded with nervous washing machines and teapots that should comment on every movement acoustic?
The manufacturer is responsible
Of course: the technology cannot protect against any error. Wouldn’t that either. But it would be somehow good if, at least, not to add more errors to life – and deprives responsibility for users. Some manufacturers of robots of the lawn mower are currently doing this. They show the sweet images of a hedgehog on your web -do with a note, but please just make it during the day.
This is approximately as trusted as and when manufacturers of automotive settings indicate that drivers may comply with applicable rules for speed and noise protection. With their vehicles, they also go too often corpses.
