Attack on a Franciscan monastery near Valencia. This morning, a man entered the monastery of the Holy Spirit of Mont, in Gilet, and started beating the brothers. According to witnesses, the man claimed to act “in the name of God”. One of the Franciscans has died, while three others are admitted to area hospitals. The Civil Guard is looking for the person responsible.
Shortly after learning the news, the provincial of the Franciscans of the Immaculate Conception, Brother Joaquín Zurera Ribó, issued a statement in which he highlighted how “with deep surprise and pain we learned this morning that a disturbed person entered the convent of Santo Espíritu del Monte (Vest, Valencia) and attacked the friars who were in his room, with the intention – according to what they heard – of killing the brothers.

The alleged murderer hit the victims “with cruelty and treachery,” according to the statement, released before learning of the death of one of the brothers. “With the exception of Brother Antonio Ivars Solbes, who was in the garden and Brother Federico Allara Aragó, who was in the chaplaincy celebrating mass, the rest of the brothers were violently attacked and we are worried,” underlines the provincial.
“We also ask the aggressor to be aware of the damage and to be able to rectify behavior that is not at all typical of the human condition,” said the statement, which asked the brothers “to be more attentive to prevent people from entering our fraternities who can cause harm of all kinds, and who thus know how to take care of each other.
