The government has appointed Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde as the new Spanish ambassador to Buenos Aires, as confirmed by Foreign Affairs sources, a decision by which Spain returns to normal diplomatic relations with the Latin American country after the withdrawal of the ambassador in May. Javier Milei’s insults towards Pedro Sánchez, for which he did not apologize.
In a joint declaration from the two governments, it is emphasized that Spain and Argentina are “brother peoples, united by deep human and social ties”.
Last May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, announced the definitive withdrawal of the ambassador in Buenos Aires, María Jesús Alonso, due to the attitude of the Argentine President, Javier Milei.
“The withdrawal of the ambassador means that the embassy will continue at the level of charge d’affaires,” Albares said then, and insisted that Milei demand “a public apology after what was an aggression” during the welcome reserved for the President of the Republic.
