Pedro Sánchez considers the reception of Edmundo González in Spain “a gesture of humanity”

The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezconfirmed on Tuesday that he plans to meet the Venezuelan opposition leader this week Edmundo Gonzalez and considered that any political reading made of his presence in Spain is inappropriate because it is a question of humanity.

Sánchez made these considerations in Shanghai during a brief informal conversation with journalists covering his visit to China after the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in that city.

The day the head of the executive was flying to Beijing, it was learned that González was going at his own request to Spain, where he arrived this Sunday and, shortly after, government sources reported that Sánchez’s intention was meet him as soon as possible.

The President of the Government confirmed his intention to meet him upon his return from his trip and, depending on the time he arrives in Madrid next Thursday, he may meet him. the same day or, failing that, on Friday.

At this meeting, he wants to know in detail how González, who has requested political asylum in Spain, and his family are doing. Sánchez rejected the criticism of the Popular Party regarding Edmundo González’s trip to Spain.

The Deputy Secretary for Institutional Affairs of the PP, Esteban Gonzalez Pons considered that the presence of Edmundo González in Spain does not mean doing a service to democracy, but rather eliminating a problem of the Maduro dictatorship. Faced with this type of accusations, Sánchez assured that any political consideration regarding this decision was inappropriate. The decision stressed that it was adopted by a simple question of humanity.

Government sources have criticized “Cynicism and hypocrisy” of the PP in this case, what they consider a political weapon against the Executive, and insist that there was no political negotiation with the regime of Nicolas Maduro for the departure of Edmundo González. They also emphasize that the Spanish Executive was the clearest and firmest in requesting that the minutes of the Venezuelan presidential elections be made public.
