In six months, 1,200 people died in road accidents in Afghanistan: driving without a license

Over the past six months, there have been more than 2,700 road accidents in Afghanistan, resulting in more than 1,200 deaths, according to the country’s General Directorate of Traffic.

As a result of these incidents, around 700 men, 103 women and 377 children died, and more than 4,000 people were injured. The reasons for the increase in the number of road accidents in the country are cited as non-compliance with traffic rules, speeding and driving by minors.

Murtaza, one of the drivers, told a TOLOnews reporter: “There are a lot of young people on the roads; they don’t know the traffic rules well and that’s why accidents happen.”

Nangialai, another driver, complains: “Some drivers are unlicensed or underage. The government should pay attention to this.”

Mohammad Mansour, a Kabul resident, said: “We demand that the government not allow unlicensed drivers to drive in the city and reduce congestion in cities.”

The General Directorate of Traffic Police announced that the five main highways in the country, with the highest number of traffic accidents, will implement an electronic governance plan.
