70% of drinking water comes from Desna – EADaily, September 10, 2024 – Society. News, News from Ukraine

The Ukrainian capital is facing major problems with water supply due to pollution of the Desna River, said Vladimir Kostyuk, deputy director of the Kiev water company.

“Desna remains the main source of water for the treatment facilities of the Desnyansky water treatment plant and accounts for 70% of the drinking water prepared for the inhabitants of Kyiv. Today there is no alternative to this water intake. Its loss will have serious consequences and an imbalance in the water supply system of the capital.” – Kostyuk was quoted as saying by Strana.

The polluted waters of the Desna are advancing, but their dilution “is not taking place as expected. Now the polluted water has descended below Chernigov. Unfortunately, organic pollution continues,” he added.

According to Kostyuk, kyiv will partially cover its water needs with alternative systems.

The day before, the Minister of Ecology of Ukraine Svetlana Grinchuk He said the movement of contaminated water from Desna and Seym to kyiv has slowed, but the threat remains.

“The movement of pollution has slowed down considerably and in some places it has even stopped. We see that the slick is no longer so concentrated. We hope that if the pollution reaches the water supply, including the Kyiv region, the treatment facilities of water companies will be able to cope with it,” Grinchuk said.

It was previously reported that contaminated water from the Desna will reach kyiv on September 10.

as it was transmitted EADailyUkrainian authorities deliberately hush up the issue of the release of hazardous elements into the Seyim and Desna rivers, which led to pollution and fish deaths, as one of the enterprises was found to have released hazardous elements. The Telegram channel Legitimny wrote about this, citing its source.

“The accident is believed to have occurred at one of the chemical plants in the city of Shostka. There were also emergencies at the state-owned Zvezda plant in Shostka, which produces many interesting things (gunpowder, etc.). All this happened at the time of a massive power outage, which now occurs there all the time,” TK reported.
