The Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martinezdiscovered this Tuesday a commemorative plaque in CAsa Esmentlands that were part of the general’s family heritage Valeriano Weyler Nicolau, Illustrious son of the city, and which were donated to the The city hall develop social projects.
At the event, which was also attended by the Councilor of Culture, Javier BonetThe mayor stressed that “for General Weyler, belonging to the Army and his service to his country became the reference point for a life path that, in addition to being fruitful, was extraordinarily long.
It is worth recalling that Valeriano Weyler Nicolau died in Madrid At 92 years old. He took over the management of the Central Staffwas also captain general of Balearic Islands, Valencia, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Navarre and Philippinesamong other territories.
He also served as President of the Supreme Council of War and Navy and, twice, that of Minister of Wara function which, on one of these occasions, was compatible with that of Minister of the Navy.
His most meritorious action took place on the banks of the river Jainafor which he received the reward of Cross of Saint Ferdinand. He continued to fight until April 1864who embarked for Santiago de Cubain order to take charge of the management of Staff of another expeditionary force, with which he returned, now as lieutenant colonel, until the evacuation of the island the following year. During this campaign he also received the awards of the Cross of Charles III for the action of Doña Ana, the rank of lieutenant colonel of Cavalry for Bondilloemployment by those of San Cristobal and Sabana and two honorable mentions.
In 1910 He was appointed captain general by the King Alfonso XIII and, in addition, he also held the positions of State Councilor and served as a full academician of the Royal Academy of History.

“Today, with the installation of this plaque in memory of Valeriano Weyler Nicolau and his heirs, we intend to do our part to vindicate his immense legacy, which clearly goes beyond the military framework,” stressed the mayor of Palma, also highlighting the “deep humanist side” and the “generous and supportive spirit” of the general.
Furthermore, Martínez said that “the city of Palma will always be indebted to the general and to those who assumed his material legacy, for having agreed to donate this family property to dedicate it to projects and actions in favor of disadvantaged children.”
Before concluding, the mayor dedicated a few words of gratitude to the work carried out by Casa Esment during its over 60 years of experienceIn this sense, he stressed that Casa Esment has diversified “over time its scope of action, but without ever neglecting its main focus or its values.”
