The “super” eight-egg sandwich that triumphs at the famous Ksual bar in Pamplona

The Ksual bar of Pamplona, former bar Ábrego, offers its customers the so-called “submarine” omelette sandwich with eight eggs, only eight euros whether it is tuna, chistorra or serrano ham. It’s a whole loaf of bread that delights customers.

The Ksual bar is located at 15 rue Olite, in the middle of the second Ensanche of the Navarrese capital. very close to other establishments that we have known in this section of local commerce.

As is the case for example, the Gayarre patisserie open since the 1960s at number 20 rue Oliteeither the old Lucía Molero haberdashery on the corner of Olite and Felipe Gorriti streets.

The Ksual bar is one of the historic bars of the second Ensanche. It occupies a location at 15 Olite Street, which was originally the Arco Iris grocery store in the 1950s. Later it was the Ábrego bar since the 60s and for several years it has been called Ksual bar.

The current owner of the bar is the man from Pamplona “from Jarauta Street”. Carlos Javier Alonso Montosa 64 years old, who has been running the business for twelve years and is also a chef: “Many people still call it bar Ábrego out of tradition,” he says.

“I have about a year and a few months left to retire. When the time comes, my daughter will continue, I imagine.” It refers to the Venezuelan Yulimar Aranguren Lopez 48 years old, who is Carlos Javier’s partner and helps him at the bar.

What bar customers highlight the most are the sandwiches that are large, called the submarine, measure 60 centimeters long. A whole loaf of tortilla and then also the homemade fried peppers and the homemade ham croquettes,” explains Carlos Javier.

As for the customers, they emphasize: “There are people passing through, from the market and regular customers who are quite numerous and come all the time. The proof we had during the pandemic is that we can function very well without Sanfermines and that is reassuring.. “We don’t have a daily menu, but rather mixed dishes and weekend portions.”

Concerning the hours, they emphasize: “Before we opened at 6 a.m. and now at 9 a.m. because the years take their toll. On weekends, the day extends a little longer into the night. We open on Sunday from noon. »

The company operates:We live well. It gives me everything. I can’t complain. It’s not as much as before, but it’s enough to live on. It’s not what it was 50 years ago. We are both happy. It’s a traditional bar. The clientele is very familiar and we know the whole neighborhood,” concludes Carlos.

Yulimar is Carlos Javier’s partner: “I come from Venezuela and, thank God, I have not lacked work here. I am very happy. At first it was difficult for us to start because it was closed. I’m a bit of Carlos’ replacement. I’m not complaining. “They welcomed us and I feel very good in Pamplona.”

Regarding the super tortilla sandwich they offer for eight euros with eight eggs, he says: “We call it the sub. It’s a complete loaf of bread. We prepare them at any time, in the morning, afternoon and evening”, concludes Yulimar.

The famous “submarino” sandwiches vary between eight euros (tuna, chistorra or serrano ham), nine euros (serrano ham and cheese, York ham and cheese), 9.50 euros (loin), even the ajoarriero sandwich with fried eggs which costs twelve euros.
