“Asylum is an act of humanity”

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, explained that Spain would not recognize for the moment a victory of Edmundo González in Venezuela, but that it would work for the unity of the European Union (EU) which allow amediation margin until the end of the year and find a solution that reflects the democratic will expressed in the elections by the Venezuelan people.

Sánchez guaranteed the work of unity of Spain in the press conference he offered at the end of his visit to China and in which he reiterated that Spain welcomes the opponent Edmundo González for “a gesture of humanity” and to ensure that the PP’s criticisms in this regard leave it “naked in their incongruity.”

Given Gonzalez’s reception, it was requested that if a person requests asylum and is told no, What would have been the reaction of the opposition and Spanish society? “Asylum is still a gesture of humanity, of humanitarian commitment of Spanish society and the government towards a person who unfortunately suffers persecution and repression,” he added.

At the political level on this issue, he indicated that the Government has been clear and requested at any time the publication of electoral lists presidential elections in Venezuela. For this reason, he has not recognized the victory of Edmundo González in the meantime and has defended this search for unity EU for an exit that reflects the democratic will of Venezuelans, which could mean the departure of Nicolas Maduro.
