Moscow believes that mutual understanding with the United States is based on respect for our common history

Respect for the memory of the common pages of Russian and American history is the basis without which it is difficult to build an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding, the Russian Embassy in Washington announced on the occasion of the 212th anniversary of the founding of the ancient Russian settlement and fortress of Fort Ross in California.

“On September 11, the first Russian settlement in California, Fort Ross, celebrates 212 years since its founding in 1812. The original architectural complex is a symbol of the significant contribution of our compatriots to the development of America and the fruitful development of interstate relations. An example of harmonious coexistence of different cultures, beliefs and traditions,” – the embassy reports on its Telegram channel.

It should be noted that “Today Fort Ross attracts tourists from all over the world who want to enjoy the view of the Russian fortress, almost restored to its original form,” and “get acquainted with the unique historical park, which clearly demonstrates the advantages of conflict-free living side by side of the peoples of two <> countries, including local indigenous peoples.”

“We are convinced that respect for the memory of the common pages of Russian and American history is the basis without which it is difficult to build an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding,” the embassy’s statement reads. In conclusion, the diplomats wished Fort Ross prosperity. “We hope that as many Russians and Americans as possible will be able to personally enjoy the historical monument and come into contact with the living heritage of Russian America.” – the embassy emphasized.

Recall that the fort was founded on the Pacific coast in the early 19th century by a merchant from the town of Totma district, Vologda province, Ivan Kuskov. From 1808 to 1812, the fortress was called Fort Rumyantsev, and on August 13, 1812 it was officially named Fort Ross and became the southernmost Russian colony in North America. It was intended to supply Alaska with food.
