It seems that the future has already arrived at the Sol Katmandú Park & Resort Hotel, located in Magaluf (Mallorca), one of the main tourist destinations on the island. This is the first hotel establishment in the Balearic Islands that used autonomous robots that improve the customer experience and make life easier for hotel employees.
In total, four robots operated this past tourist season as a pilot test with the aim of improve restaurant staff productivity from Hotel Sol Kathmandu. And these machines allow workers to focus on tasks that require human contactwhile robots are in charge of more repetitive tasks which may involve more physical load.
More precisely, there are four robots of the model Keenon T9 dedicated to transport of crockery, glassware and cutlery in the dismantling and assembly of table services. Thanks to their services, they avoid carrying up to 167 kilos per day, saving each server 33 minutes per day dedicated to moving that weight through the hotel facilities.
Among other things, they also help servers save 443 meters traveled per day, as well as 206 trips between the kitchen and the tables of the restaurant. In addition, They can carry between 30 and 40 kilos per trip. The cost of each of them is between 300 and 600 euros per month for the hotel, which rents the services of these machines to Wiongoa Mallorcan company specializing in the robotics industry.
“We don’t envision robots taking jobs away from anyone.”
The Director of Hotel Technologies at Meliá Hotels International, Tomeu Fiolassured that these robots “have a positive impact in making our workers more productive, since they carry out tedious tasks like pushing carts with dishes. These are support tasks, At no point do we envisage that robots will replace humans and eliminate jobs.. “These are simply tools to help our workers do their jobs better.”
For his part, the manager of the Sol Katmandu Park & Resort hotel, Mauricio Carballedasaid that this robotics service “has been a positive experience, the restaurant team accepted it without any problem. We had this reluctance about there being a rejection, but they took it very well and that was a big help to us. As for customers, we have a lot of children and they are excited to see a robot. Customers saw it as something curious, new, they look at it and it shocks them in a positive way.
