US denounces assassination of embassy employee in Khartoum while he was being held by FAR

The United States on Wednesday denounced the “murder” of a member of the local guard of the US embassy in Khartoum who was under the custody of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) and called on those responsible to be held accountable.

“I was deeply saddened and disturbed by the news of the killing of Tarig Hassan Ahmed while he was in FAR custody.. “He was a dedicated member of the Home Guard at the American Embassy in Khartoum, and a respected colleague and friend to many members of the embassy community,” said the Under Secretary of State for African Affairs. Phee called on the FAR to provide “full details of the circumstances surrounding the detention and death” of the embassy employee and to “ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello joined the condolences and said in his X account that “those responsible must be held accountable.”

It is not known when the embassy employee was arrested or the reasons for his death. The FAR has not yet responded to this information.

The US embassy was evacuated nearly two weeks after the start of the war in Sudan between the FAR and the Sudanese army.which began in April 2023 and continues until today, which has caused one of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet, in addition to the largest wave of displaced people in the world, almost a quarter of its population.

Tens of thousands of people died in the conflict, a figure the United States lowers to around 100,000.
