German carmaker BMW has halted deliveries of more than 1.5 million vehicles worldwide – which are not yet in the hands of customers – and recalled several models due to problems in the braking system from supplier Continental.
The Continental system is used in several BMW models manufactured since June 2022. According to the Associated Press, those affected by the failure are:
- BMW X models (except X3 and X4)
- BMW 5 and 7 series
- Rolls-Royce Spectre
- Mini Cooper
- compatriot
This does not mean that all vehicles of these models are affected by the failure, but only a portion. The cars are believed to have been manufactured at BMW plants in Germany, the United Kingdom and France, as well as in the United States, China and South Korea.
The OCU issued a statement in April recommending asking the brand’s customer service “if your vehicle is among those affected, especially if it was purchased second-hand” because in this case “it is very likely that the owner is not in the brand’s database. BMW is examining whether repairs can be carried out via a software update or require repairs with presence in workshops.
