Data centers will lead the US to record electricity consumption

This year and next, the United States could set new records for electricity consumption. The reason is the expansion of data centers and the electrification of transportation and buildings.

“Due to increasing electricity demand from data centers, manufacturing, and the electrification of transportation and buildings, U.S. electricity demand will grow to 4.101 billion kWh in 2024 and 4.185 billion kWh in 2025.” – Reuters reports, citing short-term forecasts from the US Department of Energy Information Administration.

At the same time, the share of gas generation will continue to decline in 2025 from 42% to 39%, and that of coal from 17% to 16%. Nuclear power plant production will remain at 19%, and green generation will increase its share from 23% to 25%.

Electricity consumption is not growing uniformly in the United States. For example, in 2022 it amounted to 4.067 billion kWh, and in 2023, to 4.000 billion kWh.

“Rising instances of extreme weather, forcing households and businesses to turn on air conditioning or rely increasingly on electric heating systems, are also boosting demand,” Reuters said.

As reported EADaily Russia’s unified energy system operator has published a draft scheme and program for the development of electric power systems in Russia for the period 2025-2030. The documents say that between 2023 and 2030, electricity consumption in Russia will increase from 1,122 billion kWh to 1,301 billion kWh per year. This growth in seven years is equivalent to what is expected in the United States in two years.
