The Consell of Mallorca will remove 63 palm trees from the Paseo Marítimo in Palma for safety reasons

The Consell de Mallorca has today begun work to replace 63 palm trees in the pedestrian area of the Paseo Marítimo in Palma, for safety reasons. Specifically, trees of this type will be replaced from Palais des Congrès at the Port Authority officeswhich is the section that belongs to the roads managed by the Consell de Mallorca.

Various technical assessments carried out on palm trees They detected that 63 of them, out of a total of 150, They had malformations in the trunk or had already been removed because of the same problem.

This state of the palm trees poses a danger, because during strong gusts of wind they could break and fall onto the pedestrian promenade. In 2020, during a windstorm, eight palm trees fell onto the Paseo Marítimo de Palma. For this reason, when strong winds are forecast, the walkway is closed to pedestrians to avoid incidents.

Today the work of felling the old palm trees began, a work that will last a week. Then, specimens of the variety will be planted Washingtonie, what is a stronger and more resilient palm treeIt is estimated that this work will last another two weeks.

It is not only in this area that Palma has problems with palm trees. Last Tuesday, the City Council announced that the Infrastructure sector would proceed this week with the felling of nine palm trees located on Passeig Sagrera, as they present a risk of breaking and falling.

This is the result of visual and advanced assessments carried out on a total of 105 palm trees belonging to the municipality located between Passeig Sagrera, Dalt Murada and Plaza Llorenç de Villalonga.

Please note that the Municipal Council has a protocol established by which these inspections are carried out, in order to monitor the palm population and ensure the lowest risk to it.

The felling of these nine palm trees is planned for this Wednesday and Thursday by the UTE Jardiners de Ponent maintenance contract.

The replacement of these specimens will be carried out during the next palm replacement campaign, scheduled for May-July 2025, as it is not recommended to plant palm trees in autumn and winter as they are warm plants and these seasons are generally colder and less suitable for their development.

Palma has a tree management plan whose priority is to conserve and improve the city’s green heritage so that in 25 years it will be better than the current one, and to avoid risks for citizens, being a pioneer municipality in this sense. In addition Since December 2021, there has been something called the Tree Table.

This is a body made up of the coordinators of the five districts (Centre, Levante, North, Playa de Palma and Plano de San Jorge and Poniente), as well as representatives of political groups, technicians from the Parks and Gardens department, environmentalists from the GOB, the Palma Verde collective, the Balearic Tree Association, ARCA, UIB as well as representatives of the Colleges of Public Works, the College of Agricultural Engineers and the two federations of residents of the city.

The aim of this body is to create a space for advice and coordination on trees and green spaces in Palma, in which the monitoring and periodic reporting of the multiple municipal actions aimed at increasing Palma’s tree mass, biodiversity and soil quality is carried out, both in green spaces and in tree lines.
