JAKARTA – The speaker of the Indonesian parliament Puan Maharani emphasized forest and land fires (Forest and land) in the provinces of Achech and North Sumatra (North Sumatra). He examined that this disaster was not just an ordinary natural event, but a signal that Indonesia has not yet gone out of the ecological crisis.

The state should not remain behind, responding to a cycle of natural disasters, such as forest and land fires. According to him, the management of natural disasters should change, introducing the preventive system.

“The processing of natural disasters should move from the emergency care scheme to preventive, rigid and based on sustainable ecosystem management. If the disaster occurs faster than readiness, this means that there is a system that does not work as it should, ”Pouns said on Wednesday (7/7/2025).

According to Puan, forest and land fires, which continued to denote the weakness of the supervisory system and control over the burned lands. “When such events continue to be repeated from year to year in the same region, it is necessary to improve not only the ability to turn off the shutdown, but also the responsibility in the field of regional administration and law enforcement agencies,” he said.

He turned to the community to remain vigilant and not to carry out the burning of the land. Puan also asked the community to immediately report to the authorities when they saw signs of forests and land fires to avoid wider losses.

“Local government should also continue to take part in maintaining the safety of citizens and the environment through complex efforts to combat natural disasters,” he said.
