In Malaysia, a pack of otters nearly killed a girl who was out for a run.
The incident occurred at a recreational park in Sabah when eight otters attacked a woman who was jogging. Presumably, a pack of predatory animals was roaming around in search of food and perceived the jogging girl as a threat or potential prey.
The otters attacked her, biting her severely until she bled. Passersby rushed to the victim’s aid, who probably scared the aggressive animals away.
The attack left the woman with deep injuries. CCTV cameras captured the otters fleeing the scene and running into the car park before losing their trail.

Otters generally pose no danger to humans. Adults grow up to 82 cm long and weigh five to 14 kg. Males are about 50% larger than females. Although they rarely show aggression towards people, such instances can occur if the animals feel threatened or are defending their territory.
However, in recent years, otter attacks on people have been repeatedly reported in Asia and the United States. In August 2023, an otter attacked three women in Montana, one of whom was seriously injured.
These incidents highlight that despite their peaceful reputation, otters can be dangerous in certain situations, especially if they are defending their territory or perceive humans as a threat.
