The Enmedio volcano, between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, records a dozen earthquakes in one hour

The Enmedio volcano, on the oceanic strip between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, recorded a a dozen earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.6 and 2.6.

This was confirmed by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), which reported on the series this Wednesday, when seven of the earthquakes occurred within a time interval of a little over 25 minutes and at great depths, between 26 and 38 kilometers.

This Tuesday afternoon, another earthquake was recorded in the north of Gran Canaria, in Santa María de Guía, at a depth of 18 kilometres. At the moment, it is not known whether this seismic series has anything to do with that earthquake of magnitude 3.8 of intensity III-IV yesterday in Gran Canaria, which occurred yesterday afternoon and which was felt by the population from 14 of the island’s 21 municipalities.

He Enmedio Volcano It lies at coordinates 28º05’24»N and 16º10’1.4»W in the area known as the Anaga-Agaete Channel between the capital islands, with 25.4 kilometers separating it from Tenerife and 36.2 from Gran Canaria, at a depth of 2,100 meters below the sea surface taking as a reference its base and 1,630 from its summit.

The Enmedio volcano, discovered in 1989 by a magnitude 5 earthquake that was observed on both islands, has a maximum height of 470 meters and since its discovery it has experienced recurring awakenings and sometimes with major earthquakes. The last recorded one dates back to February 2022 with an earthquake of magnitude 3.7.
