The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezexplained that Spain will not recognize a victory for the time being Edmundo Gonzalez in Venezuela but will work for the unity of the EU which leaves room for mediation until the end of the year and find a solution that reflects the democratic will expressed in the elections by the Venezuelan people.
This was stated at a press conference in China, hours before the Spanish Congress of Deputies recognized Edmundo González, with votes against the PSOE, as president-elect of the EU.
From the Asian country, Sánchez guaranteed the work of unity of Spain and reiterated that our country welcomes the opponent Edmundo González out of humanity and to guarantee that the critics of the PP in this regard, he leaves them “naked in their incongruity.”
Given González’s reception, it has been asked if someone had asked for asylum and been refused, what would have been the reaction of the opposition and Spanish society.
“Asylum is still a gesture of humanity, of humanitarian commitment of Spanish society and the government towards a person who unfortunately suffers persecution and repression,” he added.
At the political level of this matter, he indicated that the Government has been clear and has requested at all times the publication of the electoral registers of the presidential elections in Venezuela.
For this reason, he has not recognized the victory of Edmundo González in the meantime and has defended the search for EU unity for a solution that reflects the democratic will of Venezuelans, which could mean the departure of Nicolas Maduro.
Sánchez reiterated this position before the debate in Congress on the PP’s non-law proposal that calls for recognizing Edmundo González as president and insisted on his criticism of the opposition for using this issue for political purposes.
