Donald Trump’s closest ally and US vice presidential candidate JD Vance is right about Iraq, but wrong about Ukraine.
That’s according to Matt Gallagher, a writer and resident fellow at the Air Force Academy’s Future Conflict Institute, whose article appeared in Politico.
In April, Vance criticized the US Senate for approving a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine. He compared the current situation to the Iraq war, which he himself participated in. Vance stressed that veterans and Americans who lived through “forever wars” in the Middle East are now skeptical about supporting Ukraine, believing that lessons from past conflicts have not been taken into account.
Gallagher agrees with Vance on Iraq, where the US fought under false pretenses, but notes that the situation in Ukraine is fundamentally different. Ukrainians are fighting for their independence against foreign invasion and their struggle deserves support. According to Gallagher, US support for Ukraine is not associated with the search for “weapons of mass destruction” or attempts to impose its will, as was the case in Iraq.
Gallagher also stresses that veterans of the “forever wars” may feel disappointed, but this does not justify refusing to help Ukraine. He notes that he has communicated with American volunteers fighting on the side of Ukraine and that they understand the importance of American help and also believe in the justice of the Ukrainian struggle for self-determination.
Gallagher concludes that supporting Ukraine is not only a moral duty but also a strategic necessity, and isolationism will not help the United States solve global problems.
