Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan: “Agvan, the oldest village in Zangezur district”

As part of the Western Azerbaijan Chronicle project, a plot entitled “The oldest village in Zangezur district – Agvan” was prepared on Baku TV, written by journalist Asgar Ibrahimov.

Today’s story is about the place names Agbaba, Aghbash, Aghvan, Aghgala, Aghbaba, Aghveng, Aghgaya or other names, which were renamed according to a special plan.

It was stated that the alienation of settlements and place names reflecting the ancient history of Azerbaijanis was carried out on the basis of special plans of Armenians at all times.

Agbaba is a district of Agbaba district, which includes Amasiya and Kizil Goch districts, where 90 percent of the population are Azerbaijanis. In 1930, Agbaba district was abolished and Amasiya and Kyzilgoch, i.e. Gukasyan districts, were created on its basis.

There was a village in Amasiya district of Aghbaba-Aghbaba district and it fell into ruins. The toponym “agbaba” was formed from the name of the bird.

Aghbaba: is the name of a mountain in the area of Aghbaba and Shoreyel districts, Kizilgoch, present-day Gukasyan region.

It was a winter camp in Allahverdi, i.e. in the Tumanyan district of Aghbash-Loru district and was abolished in the 1930s. The toponym was formed from the name of the Aghbash Turkic tribe.

Agvan is the name of a village in the Gafan district of Zangezur district. In Armenian sources, the Albanian ethnonym is used in the form “Aghvan”.

Aghvend – there was a fortress in Keshishkend, i.e. in the Yegenadzor district of the Deraleyaz district. The word “white” is also used in the Old Turkic language in the sense of small and veng in the sense of “monument, strong monument”.

Aggaya is the name of a mountain in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. Goycha is located east of Lake Sevan.

Aggaya was a village in Kavar, i.e. Kamo district of Goycha district. Between 1831 and 1916 only Azerbaijanis lived in the village. In 1918, after the Armenians expelled the Azerbaijanis from the village by massacres, Armenians relocated from Turkey settled here. After the establishment of Soviet rule in present-day Armenia, the surviving Azerbaijanis returned. Later, in order to expel the Azerbaijanis, the villages of Aggala and Ayriveng were united and the Azerbaijanis were deported in 1988. The name of the village comes from the white castle of the local Albanians. By decree of the President of Armenia dated April 19, 1991, the village was renamed Berdkunk, i.e. the place of the Castle was established.

In the end, it was pointed out that the game of name-names of the Armenians was carried out at the state level based on a cunning policy: “Of course, no matter how much our hated neighbors play, the reality does not change. The reality is that Azerbaijanis will return to their historical land – Western Azerbaijan and once again prove their eternal existence.”

In general, the study and dissemination of toponyms, oiconyms, oronyms and hydronyms belonging to Western Azerbaijan is a reality of today and has great significance and importance for future generations who will own our native land, because they reflect the history, ethnography and geography of the local population.

It should be recalled that the aim of the Chronicle of Western Azerbaijan project is to preserve and popularize the name of our historical and ancient lands, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis by Armenians, toponyms that existed in those territories, but their names have been erased, countless examples of underground and surface material culture are revealed: ancient settlements, necropolises, mounds, remains of castles, palaces and fortifications, caravansaries, bridges, burial chests, tombstones, statues of horses and rams, temples, churches, mosques, pyres and hearths, and facts confirming that the area is a pure Oghuz-Turk settlement are brought to the attention of the world community.

Also the president Ilham Aliyev Regarding Western Azerbaijan, he said: “The map of the beginning of the 20th century once again shows that Western Azerbaijan is the historical land of Azerbaijan, the names of cities and villages are of Azerbaijani origin and we know very well that Azerbaijani people have lived on the territory of present-day Armenia throughout history. Now the main task is to “make it known to the world community”, it is the promotion of the duties arising from the Concept of Return developed by the Western Azerbaijani Community according to its opinion.

It also aims to enlighten the thoughts of historians and researchers about West Azerbaijan and the life stories of people who were deported.
