Aemet warns of snow and up to 10ºC less in these areas

There is still a little more than a week left in summer, but the first polar air mass of the season is already here. Meteorologists have warned that from Thursday to Saturday we will experience in Spain an inappropriate drop in temperature for this time of year. “Early on Friday and Saturday, you will need to dress warmly: “Many areas will drop to 10ºC and some capitals in the northern half, such as Burgos, Soria or Vitoria-Gasteiz, even to 5ºC,” said the National Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

But what is the reason for this sudden change of era? A cold air mass from the polar region is responsible which has descended to our latitudes and is arriving just behind an Atlantic front loaded with rain. From now on, the drop in temperatures and the increase in precipitation will be more pronounced in the northern part of the peninsula. Specifically, Thursday will be particularly rainy in the northern communities, where persistent rains can be expected.

What is most striking about this day is that We will see the first snowflakes of the season in Spain. “We expect light snow in the Pyrenees. It will start to snow on Thursday afternoon and Friday in the first half of the day,” they explain on Eltiempo.es. “Although they will be very light, they could add a few centimetres in the Catalan Pyrenees.” There will also be rain and storms in the eastern part of Catalonia and the north of the Balearic Islands, but in the centre and south of the peninsula the skies will be clear.

cold mornings

On Thursday, “the drop in temperatures will be particularly pronounced in the northern half of the peninsula and will begin to be noticeable in the central area, but just further south, where the heat will continue,” notes meteorologist José Miguel Viñas in Meteored. In any case, the drop in temperatures will continue on Friday. “There will be some frost in the Pyrenees and locally in other mountain ranges in the northern third, with minimum temperatures around 5ºC in some capitals of Castilla y León,” Viñas continues.

Experts predict that this polar air mass will subtract, at most, between 10ºC and 12ºC of temperature from normal levels for this time of year. For a few days we will have a glimpse of what autumn will be like in Spain and, in fact, in Soria the thermometer will reach 2ºC in the early hours of the day. That is to say, in the next few days we will have to take the jackets out of the closet, at least for the early risers, but the change will not last long.

As the weekend approaches, the rains will stop and temperatures will rise again. In fact, on Friday, a rebound in thermometers is expected in Galicia and the southwest of the peninsula. Unlike the northern half of the country, The Guadalquivir Valley will reach maximum temperatures of 35ºCtypical summer day. Although residents of northern communities should prepare for a cold Saturday morning, this day will be the starting point for temperatures to stabilize.

summer weekend

Yes, experts say this little tasting The autumn weather will end this weekend. “The precipitation will decrease now [el sábado] at dawn in the Cantabrian region, where the sky will clear. Anticyclonic, dry and sunny weather will prevail over much of the country. “Easterly winds will blow strong to very strong in the area of the Strait and Alborán. In areas exposed to them, clouds will accumulate and light rain may occur,” explains Viñas.

For the rest of the weekend, the sky will be clear, or at most slightly cloudy, on the Iberian Peninsula and the two archipelagos. “The trend is for temperatures to rise, although on Saturday they will drop in western Andalusia, but in inland areas the intense heat will persist during the central hours of the day,” explains Viñas. “On Sunday, the anticyclonic weather will continueonce again the sunny atmosphere predominates, although in the morning low clouds and fog will be frequent in the interior of Galicia, in the Cantabrian communities and in some areas of the Mediterranean.

As for next week, it looks like the weather will continue to be warm in the central and southern areas and cooler in the northern areas. but without so many temperature contrasts. Therefore, a few days are coming with a striking glimpse of autumn, but at the weekend the typical late summer weather will return. The Canary Islands, for their part, will experience mild weather, although the thermometers will also rise during the day on Friday.
