The Kuril Islands’ Ebeko volcano spewed ash to a height of 2.5 km

The Ebeko volcano on the Kuril Islands has spewed a column of ash to a height of 2.5 km above sea level, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Sakhalin region reported on September 12.

The ash column was observed to extend over 5 km in a northeasterly direction from the volcano.

“In the city of Severo-Kurilsk, no ash fall was observed. There was no smell of hydrogen sulfide. There is no threat to the livelihood of the population. There were no calls or complaints from the population,” — says a message on the department’s telegram channel.

There are no international air routes near the volcano. There are no registered tourist groups in the area of the volcano, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

On August 27, Ebeko volcano ejected ash to a height of 2 km. As a result of the ash emission, the plume extended northwards to a distance of more than 5 km.

Ebeko is located in the north of Paramushir. The height of the volcano is 1,156 m. It has been assigned an “orange” colour code for aviation hazard. This means that the volcano is showing increased activity with a high probability of eruption.
