An agreement was signed between the Governorate of Vatican City State and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation for the restoration works of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
Oku.Az The document was signed by Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and Cardinal Fernando Vergez Alzaga, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State.
During the visit to the Vatican, a meeting was held with Cardinal Fernando Vergez Alzaga, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, and with several other officials. At the meeting, relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See and joint projects with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation were discussed.
It should be noted that in the past the Heydar Aliyev Foundation contributed to the restoration of a number of historical monuments of human significance in the Vatican and to work in the field of cultural heritage protection.
The Azerbaijani delegation then visited St. Paul’s Basilica.
It should be noted that St. Paul’s Basilica is one of the largest monuments in the Vatican and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980. In 2025, more than 30 million Catholic pilgrims are expected to visit this church as part of the Holy Jubilee Year organized every 25 years by the Vatican. The restoration works are carried out primarily to ensure safe access for visitors to this religious center during the Holy Jubilee Year of 2025.
