The Ertzaintza arrested early this Wednesday to Thursday in Bilbao a 34-year-old man, accused of the murder of his partner, a 31-year-old woman. The victim died from stab wounds, as confirmed by the Basque police early this morning.
According to these sources, the events occurred around 00:23 this morning in a house in the Santutxu and Atxuri neighborhood of the capital of Bizkaia. The neighbors of the neighborhood notified the Ertzaintza “because of the screams and noises that were heard,” as reported. And it was added that “patrols from the Bilbao Municipal Police and the Ertzaintza itself immediately went to the scene.”
“Inside the house, officers found a woman who had been seriously injured by stab wounds. Later, a doctor pronounced her dead. The alleged perpetrator, with whom the victim lived, was also present at the scene,” the police reported.
The man was stopped and detained by members of the Bilbao Municipal Police, in collaboration with the resources of the Ertzaintza. “Apparently, the man had psychiatric problems and was transferred to the hospital. The Ertzaintza, responsible for preparing the report and the investigation, has no history or criminal record of gender violence related to this couple,” the police explain.
Euskadi has the phone activated 900 840 111 for women victims of violence. It is a free public telephone service, operating 24 hours a day, 366 days a year and staffed by trained professionals. More than 30 women were murdered in 2024 in Spain, which has recorded nearly 1,300 cases since records began in 2003.
