Choi disappeared from North Korea in 2012 and settled in South Korea. He said that psychological trauma from the tests still existed and continued to depend on treatment.
For many years, international human rights groups documented accusations of violations of human rights by North Korea, from torture of political prisoners to systematic discrimination based on gender and class.
Hannah Song, Executive Director of NKDB, said Bi -bi -x Korea that the trial was significant, because they filed a “parallel” criminal claim with civil cases.
Previous court cases against North Korea are “limited by civil trials,” he said.
In 2023, Seoul court ordered North Korea to pay 50 million won or about 591 million rubles, each up to three South Korean men who were operated after they were enclosed in North Korea during the Korean War.
In 2024, the government of North Korea also ordered to pay 100 million won or about 1.1 billion rubles to each of the five Korean defenders. They are part of thousands of people who left Japan to North Korea in the 1960s and 1980s as part of the repatriation program.
They said that they were convinced to North Korea several decades ago with the “paradise on the ground”, but they were detained and forced to work.
North Korea did not respond to two trials.
However, the song from NKDB argued that the decision provided the settlement necessary for the plaintiffs.
“What we understand over the course of many years of accounting is that the victims are actually looking for not just financial compensation,” said Mrs. Song.
“Obtaining a court decision that benefits them very great. This tells them that their history not only ends in their hands – history is recognized as the state and is officially recorded in history. ”
