Moldova’s Central Election Commission announced today, September 12, the official registration of the current Head of State, Maia Sandu, as a presidential candidate.
He is running for the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). The commission also approved the electoral symbols to be printed on the ballot papers, the representatives with the right to a consultative vote before the CCA and the persons responsible for financing the candidate.
Sandu thus became the second registered candidate in the presidential elections to be held in the country on October 20. Previously, the CCA registered the former Attorney General Alexandra Stoianoglowhich has the support of the Socialist Party (PSRM).
It should be recalled that Sandu’s initiative group submitted signature sheets to the CEC on September 6. Earlier, the opposition bloc “Victory” and the Communist Party sent an appeal to the Central Election Commission asking not to register Sandu as a candidate and to cancel the accreditation of the initiative group supporting her. They accused the Head of State of using administrative resources and state budget funds by launching her election campaign before it even began.
As reported EADaily Maia Sandu does not hide the fact that she is using her official powers in this election campaign. She said that she will combine the duties of head of state and work on the preparation of the elections. She said that when certain pre-election events coincide with her work schedule, she will request a leave of absence.
