“Birth with a scalpel” by elDiario.es, finalist for the Roche Prize for health journalism

The Roche Awards for Health Journalism, an initiative of the Gabo Foundation, have selected as a finalist the project “Birth with a scalpel”, an investigation by elDiario.es that, for the first time in Spain, reveals the cesarean rates in more than 360 public and private hospitals throughout the country.

These awards, which aim to recognize excellence and promote quality journalistic coverage on health and science issues, have included this research among the best digital journalism works of the year, which exposes how the probability of giving birth by cesarean section varies considerably in certain centers, influenced by factors such as available resources, the day of the week, the schedule of professionals and the protocols of each hospital or autonomous community.

The jury of the Digital Journalism category, composed of Natasha Felizi, director of scientific dissemination at the Serrapilheira Institute; Manuel Fuentes García, editorial director of the EFE agency in America; with the medical opinion of Juan Valentín Fernández de la Gala, graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Seville, Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cádiz and specialist in forensic anthropology from the Universities of Granada and Complutense of Madrid, he highlighted that the investigation “It stands out for the appropriate approach and presentation of the data, the use of testimonies, the inclusion of data journalism resources and the impact on the implementation of public policies that can eventually lead to moderating the practice of cesarean sections in hospitals.”

The awards, an initiative of the Gabo Foundation, selected the work of elDiario.es from more than 800 applications sent by media outlets from more than 21 countries. Along with elDiario.es, the report “224 kilometers with kidney disease on your back”, published by El Faro (El Salvador) and “Desafios e soluções para melhorar a prenatale coverage in communities” are also nominated in the digital journalism category. ribeirinhas na Amazônia”, published by Amazônia Vox and Canal Futura (Brazil).
