Wonka was one of the big surprises of last year’s cinema. Using original material from famous writer Roald Dahl, Warner designed a tender Christmas story and moderately sweet from the hand of a Timothée Chalamet who showed that he could be much more than a fiercely hieratic artist. The result was the unanimous applause of specialist critics and the conquest of an audience which, at the time of the project’s announcement, was extremely skeptical about the need to tell the origin story behind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Now, the filmmaker of the first part, Paul Kingannounced that he had an idea for Wonka 2. But when might we see it? What remains to be said about the past of the famous chocolatier?
Of course, and like any self-respecting sequel, a Wonka 2 depended almost exclusively on box office results of its predecessor, but of course also of the participation of Chalamet, warm heart of this sweet and of course magical universe. The economic profitability is more than proven. The film had a budget of $125 million and last year it managed to increase 634 million at the worldwide box office. Figures that made the protagonist the poster champion, since in the same way the Oscar nominee managed to lead the theaters in 2024 thanks to Dune: part two. Currently, King is in the midst of promoting Paddington: Jungle Adventurebut that didn’t stop him from being asked about the future of Dahl’s material, assuring that there was an idea for Wonka 2. Although we are at a very early stage of development.
‘Wonka 2’: a very international title
King recently told the media that he was writing the first draft of Wonka 2. Which is not to say that in reality the Briton seems to have a very clear idea of where he wants to direct the sequel, foreseeing that the young protagonist will surely begin an international trip (narrative mechanism similar to that which the author followed with the Paddington saga).
The multi-BAFTA nominated director began his career on the British small screen, until his adaptation of the story of Michael Bond has managed to become a phenomenon in the Anglo-Saxon audiovisual industry. Indeed, the first reviews of the third opus of the adorable bear confirm that the director has returned to creation an endearing adventure for the whole family. Of course, before even launching any initiative with Wonka 2King is expected to be released in 2026 Prince Charminga Walt Disney adaptation that will investigate the prototypes of “Prince Charming” which the company exploited in its classic animated films. We don’t know its official plot, but for the moment, we know that the cast will feature two stars of the caliber of Chris Hemsworth and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

We have a story that we love and we know where we want to take it. I will try to include some international travel. So maybe that’s the only tease I’ll give. What can we expect next?
Rather than relying on a connection with the version of Tim BurtonKing’s Wonka opts for a brighter side of the character, much closer to the aesthetic and thematic aspect of the role he played. Gene Wilder in 1971. At the end of the part, the character finally realizes his dream of having his own establishment. King intends to continue telling a unique story with the sequel, but in a world that will closely resemble the one audiences already know. Like the prequel, the sequel will tell a new story not seen in any of the books, as King himself revealed in a previous interview in which he says the following:
“We have many other stories of Wonka that we would like to tell. It’s not like Dune: part onewhere you say “This is what will happen in part two”. Hopefully this will work very well as a standalone film. But I would definitely like to do more. And I would like to spend more time in this world and meet more Oompa Loompas,” he said.
