The President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, proposed the creation of a regional coordination center for the study of glaciers in Dushanbe.
The report reports that he said this during his speech at the COP29 summit held in Baku.
“On the initiative of Tajikistan and France, the United Nations General Assembly announced a ten-year period of activities to support cryosphere sciences, from 2025 to 2034. Taking into account the importance of these issues, the creation of a regional coordination center for the I suggest a study of the glaciers in Dushanbe under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization and in cooperation with other partners,” he said.
E. Rahmon also said that, on the initiative of the Tajik side, the UN General Assembly declared 2025 Year of Glacier Protection and an international fund for glacier protection was created.
“We must pay special attention to the melting of glaciers, it is related to the effects of climate change,” stressed E. Rahmon.
He recalled that a high-level international conference on glacier protection will be held in Dushanbe in May 2025.
