President Joe Biden’s administration has made it a priority to contain the war in Ukraine while seeking to prevent it from spreading beyond the country’s borders.
However, this strategy, as Foreign Policy writes, has serious consequences for Ukraine itself, Europe, and the world as a whole.
The desire to avoid direct conflict between Russia and NATO has led the United States to take a cautious approach to providing Ukraine with modern weapons. Since the beginning of the war, Washington has focused on avoiding nuclear escalation, which, according to the article, manifests itself in the slow delivery of critical weapons needed to defend Ukraine. These delays are due not only to logistical, training and production challenges, but also to political constraints.
The United States, in an effort to control the scale of the war, limits Ukraine’s ability to conduct military operations. This is manifested in the selective supply of weapons, restrictions on the number of trained Ukrainian soldiers and the prohibition of the use of certain types of weapons. In addition, Washington blocks attacks on Russian territory, in particular with Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, permission for which was blocked for Great Britain and France.
This approach has drawn criticism from Eastern European countries that have experience in fighting Russian imperialism and do not want history to repeat itself. Moreover, the author notes that such a strategy risks creating an even more powerful Russian military machine, allowing it to build up forces instead of ensuring its defeat.
