AEMET predicts cloudy skies and rain in the north, with high temperature warnings inland

This Wednesday, an Atlantic front will approach the northwest of the peninsula and cause significant changes in temperatures. According to the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the day will be marked by cloudy skies and possible precipitation in the north of Galicia and the west of the Cantabrian Sea, while the high temperatures will put several regions in the interior of the peninsula on thermal alert.

The provinces of Córdoba, Cáceres, Zaragoza, Toledo and some areas of the Community of Madrid are under yellow alert due to high temperatures, with values that could reach 38ºC in some areas. The Cordoba countryside, the Tagus Valley in Toledo and the southern, Las Vegas and western regions of the Community of Madrid are among the most affected. The banks of the Ebro in Zaragoza and the mountainous areas of Cáceres such as Villuercas and Montánchez will also see maximum temperatures around 36ºC.

In other areas such as the middle Ebro and the depressions on the southern slope of the Atlantic, temperatures will be around 36ºC. The capitals that will record the highest values are Toledo with 38ºC, followed by Badajoz, Ciudad Real, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén and Zaragoza with 37ºC, and Cáceres, Guadalajara, Logroño, Madrid and Pamplona with 36ºC, according to the weather agency’s forecasts.

Cloudiness and precipitation possible in Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the centre of the peninsula

The approach of the Atlantic front will leave cloudy skies in Galicia and the western Cantabrian Sea, with the probability of light rain, more intense in northern Galicia. In the morning, light cloudiness is expected in the Mediterranean area and the Strait, which will dissipate during the day.

In the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, the sky will start clear or with high clouds that will increase throughout the day in the west and south. In the afternoon, evolution clouds will form and AEMET predicts the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms falling in the center and interior of the peninsula, especially in the Iberian system and the Pyrenees.

In the Canary Islands, a shift in cloudiness from west to east is expected, with a predominance of medium and high clouds and a probability of occasional showers and thunderstorms on the mountainous islands. Light rainfall could also occur in other areas of the archipelago. The haze will affect the southern third of the peninsula and the Alborán region, and could extend, although with less intensity, to the rest of the southern peninsula.

Maximum temperatures will decrease in the Cantabrian Sea and western Andalusia, while they will increase in western Galicia, eastern Andalusia and some areas of the centre and northeast of the peninsula. As for minimums, they will increase in the northeast and centre-north and decrease in the areas of the western interior.

As for the wind, it is expected to blow from the east in the Mediterranean area and the eastern third, with strong intervals in the Strait and on the coast of Almeria. In the Canary Islands, moderate trade winds will predominate, with some strong gusts in exposed areas. The Galician coasts will have winds from the north and east, with strong intervals in the Rías Baixas.

AEMET recommends caution in areas affected by heat and sudden changes in weather conditions, particularly in areas under warning due to high temperatures and the risk of storms.
