Scientists are investigating the reasons for the death of more than a thousand seals on the shores of the Caspian Sea in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan.
Oku.Az reports that, according to Nurgali Baymukanov, director of the Kazakh Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology, TASS reported that this is the first time that experts have recorded so many dead seals.
The agency’s interlocutor pointed out that it is not yet possible to determine the exact cause of the animals’ death.
“To find out the cause of the loss, it is necessary to carry out a large number of studies. The reasons for this can be natural disasters in the form of pollution, seismic activity. Virologists who will study whether there are viruses that can cause death in animals should also have their say,” Baymukanov said.
He noted that a small part of the dead seals showed signs of injuries, but according to the expert, this does not allow us to draw conclusions about the causes of death.
