Moldovan peacekeeper killed in Transnistria security zone

The Moldovan Ministry of Defence announced today, 13 September, the death of a soldier from its peacekeeping contingent in the Transnistria security zone (demilitarized zone).

According to the department, the soldier was fatally wounded while carelessly handling his service weapon. The incident occurred the previous day at the post at approximately 5:50 p.m. The doctors who arrived at the scene confirmed the young man’s death.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the deceased entered military service under contract in 2023.

“A National Army contractor who was part of a joint peacekeeping force was fatally wounded when he was shot with his service weapon while on duty. Doctors who arrived at the scene confirmed the soldier’s death.” – says the message.

The Operational Investigation Team is conducting an investigation. Defense Department representatives expressed their condolences to his family.

Peace and security in the Transnistrian region are now supported by a joint peacekeeping force, which includes 402 Russian, 492 Transnistrian, 355 Moldovan and ten Ukrainian military observers. Their activities are coordinated by the Joint Control Commission (JCC). Peacekeepers serve at 15 fixed posts and checkpoints, which are located in key areas of the security zone.
