The former president of the government Mariano Rajoy held a meeting with Venezuela’s president-elect, Edmundo González, to express his support and desire for “democracy to be established in Venezuela with him as president of the country.”
This is the second meeting held by the Venezuelan opposition leader since he went into exile in Spain last Sunday and requested political asylum in the country. González, who fled Venezuela for fear of reprisals from the regime of Nicolas Maduro, held this meeting with Rajoy a day after being received by the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, whose executive rejected the non-law proposal in the Congress of Deputies of the Popular Party to recognize González Urrutia as the elected president of Venezuela.
The first president of the PSOE in a democracy, Felipe González, also met this Friday in Madrid with Edmundo González, as confirmed by the Foundation that bears the name of the former president. Felipe González was one of the main international critics of Chavism and one of the figures closest to the opposition to the regime. Eight years ago, he became involved in the defense of Leopoldo López, now exiled in Spain, while he was imprisoned in the Ramo Verde prison, and he did so as an advisor to the defense of the dissident.
González’s position contrasts with that of the other former socialist president of democracy, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is close to Chavism and who continues without commenting on Nicolas Maduro’s opposition to the publication of the minutes of the presidential elections that pitted him against Edmundo González on July 28.
The PP also registered the same PNL in the Senate, where it has an absolute majority. It is therefore expected that this proposal will be adopted in the coming weeks, also with the support of Vox, which was ahead of the Popular Party of the High Commission. House and presented the same proposal before the PP.

With the meeting with Rajoy, the Popular Party takes a new step in recognizing González Urrutia as the elected president of Venezuelans and reproaches the government for having a “lukewarm” behavior with the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro, something that the spokesperson of the people in the Senate, Alicia García, on the social network
On the other hand, the Chavista executive has already announced that it will summon the Spanish ambassador to Caracas for consultations regarding the statements made this Thursday by Margarita Robles in which she described Venezuela as a “dictatorship”, remarks that the Chavistas describe as “insolent” and that have exacerbated tensions between Spain and Venezuela.
