This professional sector demands a fair transition to the self-employed regime (RETA), on the part of those who for years have contributed through mutual insurance companies and, as a result, will have pensions that they consider small and insufficient.
The member of the “J-2 Córdoba Movement”, Juan Luis González, stressed that the situation affects lawyers, but also other professional sectors, such as engineers. “In these sectors, social security benefits in terms of retirement, temporary or permanent disability are provided through employment mutuals, which are more similar to private banking-type entities, so social security is different from that of employees and the self-employed,” he said. Ultimately, such a situation generates real situations of tiny pensions.

But how did it come to this? González explained that with the creation of the self-employed workers’ regime, certain professions were allowed to practice in mutual societies. The decision did not correspond to each worker, but, in this specific case, to the CNational Bar Council through what is requested in each professional association. “We thought that the mutual was good to ensure our retirement, but reality has shown that there are colleagues who, after having worked and having contributed to the mutual insurance company for forty years or more, they have a pension of 300 or 400 eurossomething hard to believe.
