In Azerbaijan, a man hanged his cousin, whom he caught in the bedroom with his wife

On April 22, 2023, a call from Shamakhi to the Ministry of Interior (MIA) hotline 102 mobilized law enforcement in the region. A resident of the district, Mehman Shirinov (first and last name is conditional), reported to the police that he had killed his minor cousin Rauf Shirinov by hanging him in his home.

Oku.Az reports that after the Ministry of Internal Affairs informed the Shamakhi district police about this, the operational investigation team, created together with the prosecutor’s office, went to the address indicated in the information.

Detectives witnessed a teenager being hanged from the kitchen ceiling of Mehman Shirinov’s home. Rauf Shirinov, born in 2005, was untied from the rope where he was hanging and handed over to the region’s Forensic Medical Expertise and Pathological Anatomy unit for examination. Mehman Shirinov, born in 1994, who admitted to committing the incident, was included in the investigation as a defendant. From the necessary investigative actions carried out around the incident, it became clear that the incident was committed for reasons of jealousy. This version was based on Mehman Shirinov’s statements during the investigation.

It should be noted that along with Mehman, his father, Kismat Shirinov, born in 1967, was also investigated as a participant in the incident and was taken into police custody. During the statements of the investigation, Mehman Shirinov stated that he had an official marriage with Čicek. They have two children from this marriage. During the marriage, the couple had no domestic problems. One of his relatives who came and went regularly with his family was his cousin Rauf. Mehman didn’t even think there were any doubts about him. Also about his wife Čicek.

Mehman emphasized that the day before the incident, he made preparations to go to the produce market in Shamakhi early the next day. Subh had to spend the night in the next room, not in the room they always shared, as he left home early so as not to disturb his family. He left his mobile phone charging in the room where his wife was sleeping. Around 3 a.m., a call on Mehman’s mobile phone first woke up his wife Chichay. At the same time, Mehman also woke up to this call in another room and quickly entered the room where his family was sleeping to pick up the phone. At that moment she saw him approaching the door of the room with the phone in his wife’s hand. The guest took the phone from him, spoke to his close friend, and briefly talked about going to the market.

While on the phone, he noticed the pillow moving in the space between his wife’s bed and the other bed next to it. Meanwhile, he quickly ended the phone call, turned on the light in the room, and walked over to the bed. What he saw gave him the shock of his life. He saw that Rauf, his uncle’s teenage son who always sat at the table with the family, was hiding between the beds.

After that, Mehman called his wife Çiçek and asked, “Oh, Çiçek, what is this? What’s wrong?” Čicek replied: “I didn’t call him, he had something to say, that’s why he came. He didn’t hide and I didn’t know it.” Although what Cichek told his wife did not convince Mehman at first glance, he had to settle with Cichek at the time.

Rauf, who remained silent in the face of all the guest’s questions, wanted to run out of the room, but his cousin stopped him. Mehman called his father Kismat, who lives nearby, and asked him to come and see them immediately and bring a shotgun and two cartridges. When his father asked him why, he replied: “It’s a matter of honor.” A little later his father Kismet arrived, but he did not bring the rifle or cartridges as Mehman said.

When he entered the room, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his nephew Rauf kneeling on the floor in front of his son. I already knew where the problem was. Furthermore, Mehman also called his father-in-law and invited them to his house, telling him that his daughter, i.e. his wife Chichay, had betrayed him.

Following his son’s instructions, Kismet handed the Guest the nylon rope he had brought from the yard. With that rope he stretched Rauf’s arms on the ground in front of him, tying his legs. He began to beat Rauf and told his father: “I will kill him by hanging myself or I will commit suicide.” Kismet begged his son not to dip his hand in blood. The guest insisted that he would kill him. In the morning, the father, dissatisfied with his son’s insistence, left the place and headed home. After that, Mehman cut a part of the rope that tied Rauf’s arm, made a rope and put it around his neck and took him to the kitchen. Feeling that he would kill him, Rauf started pleading with Mehman saying “don’t kill me, let me go, I will commit suicide.” The guest, without paying attention to this, took her to the kitchen, put her on the seat, climbed onto the table himself and tied the rope around her neck until he hung it from the ceiling. After getting off, he pushed the seat with his foot saying “you must die”, leaving Rauf hanging from the rope. When he started snoring, he left the kitchen and entered the bedroom.

When the guest entered the room, he saw that his mother-in-law and father-in-law were already there. Taking the kapron thread from the floor of the room, he approached his wife and tried to put it on her neck saying: “You must die too”, when his mother-in-law Solmaz began to beg him by holding her hand and saying: “Don’t kill my daughter, take her and tie her with this rope instead of your dog, let her stay there.” After that, Mehman was carried away by his mother-in-law’s words and asked his wife to bring him a notebook and a pen. After sitting in front of the flower and taking notes about who owns the cattle they own and who is not a claimant to any property, he called the police and reported that he had hanged his cousin.

As for the secret relationship between Cichek and Rauf, there were some rumors about it in the village some time ago. Although the identity of the stranger who came to Chichay’s house when Mehman was not at home is unknown, his mother was informed about it by neighbors. Čicek, who objected, told his mother that it was not a stranger, but his brother. In his statement to the investigation, Cicek said that “Rauf was a person who always came and went with us. That day he wrote a message on my phone and said that he wanted to talk to me, so he said that he would come to see us at 12 night. I didn’t tell him at that time, I told him to come at another time, my wife was not at home “I meant tomorrow. When I came back, I didn’t see Rauf in the room. But he didn’t leave, he hid without me. “Then I went to sleep, I didn’t know anything about my husband’s phone.”

Although this statement by Chichey did not seem sincere to the investigation, it was added to the criminal case and sent to the court for investigation. The trial of the said criminal case took place in the Sumgayit Serious Crimes Court. The court made a correct legal assessment of the evidence collected and the statements received and issued the decision to sentence Mehman Shirinov to 11 years and his father Kismet Shirinova to 1 year and 6 months as a participant.
