Security of Israelis in Sri Lanka: details from the National Security Council

Israel’s National Security Council reported a reduction in threats in Sri Lanka and the lifting of restrictions previously imposed on Israeli travel to the country. These measures were taken on October 23, but now the situation in the island state has stabilized.

After three weeks of restrictions, the threat was significantly reduced thanks to the decisive action of local law enforcement authorities, who arrested several members of terrorist groups planning attacks against Israeli citizens.

The terrorist threat level in Sri Lanka has been reduced from level 4 (high) and level 3 (medium) in the southwestern part of the country to level 2, now classified as “occasional threat”.

Despite the reduced threat, the National Security Council strongly advises Israelis in Sri Lanka to exercise caution and adhere to standard security precautions provided for threat level 2 countries.

Israelis in Sri Lanka are encouraged to report any hostility towards Israeli citizens or Jews of other nationalities to local authorities. It is also recommended to avoid public use of Israeli or Jewish symbols.

Previously, Cursor wrote that since the start of the war and the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, the danger for Israelis traveling to Europe and other regions has increased significantly. In particular, following the recent riots in Amsterdam and the continued high threat level in Thailand, an analysis of the risks to Israelis in South America was carried out.

According to the latest recommendations, countries that are safe for Israelis include Uruguay, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, Suriname, Paraguay and Chile.
