Mussolini’s granddaughter leaves Giorgia Meloni’s party because she is too extremist

THE granddaughter of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini who was previously active in the far-right Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, Rachele Mussolinileft the Prime Minister’s party, Giorgia Melonito move to the conservative Forza Italia (FI) party, more in line with his “moderate and centrist sensibility”.

The councilor who obtained the most votes in the Rome City Council with the FdI considers that the formation of Meloni has too extreme positions in particular on civil rights and She feels more comfortable in the party founded by Silvio Berlusconi and which is now led by the Vice President of the Executive and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, the newspaper ‘Repubblica’ revealed on Thursday.

“I thank the FdI for believing in me and supporting me during two candidacies, the affection and esteem remain, but for me the time has come to turn the page and join a party that feel closer to my moderate and centrist sensibility”, Mussolini briefly told Ansa news agency after learning of his decision.

The granddaughter of the ‘Duce’, twice elected councilor in the municipal elections of Rome, the last one being the most voted, maintains differences with Meloni’s ultras, as happened last August with the controversy surrounding the intersexual nature of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, which he described as a “smear campaign”, according to the newspaper. Khleif won gold at Paris Games and, after the withdrawal of his Italian rival Angela Carini, Meloni, who said that this confrontation had not taken place on an equal footing.

Rachele, daughter of Romano, the dictator’s fourth son, and half-sister of former MEP Alessandra, had also opposed in the past the retention of the tricolour flame, one of the emblems of the Italian Social Movement, heir to her grandfather’s fascist party, as the symbol of FdI. Last June, there was talk of her candidacy for the European elections, This ultimately did not come to fruition through her own decision. Then she assured, in the ‘Corriere dell’a Sera’, that, even if she was proud of her surname because of her father, a prominent jazz musician, “they would have spoken only of my name and they would have said: ‘Meloni is a candidate for the Duce’s granddaughter'”.
