Thomas, the husband of 38-year-old former model and Miss Switzerland finalist Kristina Joksimovic, who is accused of murdering his wife, has sought to secure her release through an appeal.
However, the Federal Court in Lausanne rejected his request on 11 September, BZ Basel reports. The judge upheld the decision that Thomas should remain in custody.
The court made its decision on the basis that the defendant showed “specific signs of mental illness.” Previously, the Basel Criminal Court and the Cantonal Court also refused to release Thomas. Now the Federal Court has confirmed these decisions, citing materials from previous investigations.
Kristina Joksimovic, a mother of two, was found dead on 13 February 2024 at her home in Binningen, near Basel. According to police, Thomas strangled his wife, then dismembered the body and tried to destroy it with chemicals, including a blender. The day after the crime, he was arrested as the prime suspect.
Thomas admitted to the murder during a reenactment of the crime, but later claimed at the hearing that he acted in self-defense, supposedly fending off his wife, who attacked him with a knife. He later claimed that he found Christina’s body in the laundry room and “in a panic” dismembered it. The medical examiner’s office refuted this theory, pointing to the premeditation of Thomas’ actions and his callousness in removing evidence.
The expert report highlighted the sadistic-sociopathic traits of the defendant’s behavior on the day of the crime. Previously, Thomas had already shown violence towards Christina and repeatedly strangled her, which is also confirmed by the case materials.
Kristina Joksimovic has been a successful model and was a finalist in the Miss Switzerland contest in 2007. She started her own business training models for entrepreneurs, helping them to master communication and style skills. She married Thomas in 2017 and together with their two daughters they presented the image of an ideal family on social media. However, a few weeks before the tragedy, a serious crisis occurred in their relationship.
