Death of Rafael Soto, the resident of San Agustín de Córdoba who fought for the return of the Virgin of Angustias

The return of the Virgin of Angustias at its historic headquarters in San Agustín was possible for many things, but among them was the work of Rafael Soto Gavilán, who pushed the neighborhood residents to ask that the brotherhood return to its usual home.

Rafael Soto died this Saturday after a few weeks in which his health deteriorated, the brotherhood reported. He was 82 years old. He was born in the neighborhood of San Agustín, where since childhood he dedicated himself to Our Lady of Sorrows and lived the tear which marked the departure of the images from there in 1961.

For a few years it was emigrated to Germany until his return to his city and was always a participatory neighbor in the affairs of his neighborhood. He was one of those who took the initiative to make Cárcamo Street semi-pedestrian and install the terminal.

In 2009, when the Virgin of Angustias returned temporarily to San Agustín for the exhibition in 450 birthday of the brotherhood mobilized the neighbors to register in the brotherhood and obtain their definitive return.

As president of the San Agustín neighborhood association, he carried out numerous activities, such as Flamenco Mass which in 2010, under the direction of the guitarist Merengue de Córdoba, served to raise funds for the restoration of the images of Juan de Mesa.

He continued to work on it until it was completed between 2013 and 2014, after approval by the general council of the brothers. In 2012 he was also elected president of the Central District Councilwhich coordinates the neighborhood associations of the historic district. Its participatory and active character was decisive in those years.

He funeral Rafael Soto’s funeral will be celebrated this Sunday, September 15 at 5:00 p.m. in the church of San Agustín, as confirmed by the brotherhood of Las Angustias, which expressed its regrets for the loss of the brother.
