Germany needs to arm itself faster to keep up with Russia: IfW experts

A new arms race has already begun in the world, in which Germany is unacceptably lagging behind, despite its status as the largest economy in the European Union.

As DW writes:*This is the conclusion reached by a group of scientists from the Kiel Institute for World Economy (IfW). In their study, entitled “Combat capability over decades”, they state that 20 years ago the Bundeswehr had 2,398 battle tanks, but by 2021 that number had dropped to 339.

Of the 423 combat aircraft, only 226 remain. If the current pace of re-equipment continues, the number of tanks and aircraft will be restored to the previous number in 2066 and 2038, experts estimate.

Based on all this, the IfW experts conclude that Germany is increasing its defence capabilities unacceptably slowly against the backdrop of the rapidly increasing capacity of the Russian military industry.

Head of the team of authors Professor Wolf Guntram He says Russia only needs six months to release all the weapons currently held by the Bundeswehr.

“Leaving everything as it is, given Russia’s aggressiveness, would simply be careless and irresponsible.” – the teacher laments.

According to him, Russia is “becoming an increasingly serious threat” to NATO countries, while Germany is taking too long to develop the weapons necessary for deterrence.

As reported EADailyFormer Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev He said Moscow was losing patience and could use nuclear weapons.
