The Bundestag made an unexpected proposal on Ukraine

The German parliament has tabled an unexpected proposal on Ukraine. Its author was the head of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the Bundestag, Rolf Mützenich.

In an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper, he called for the creation of an international contact group on Ukraine to develop a peace initiative to resolve the conflict.

“The Federal Chancellor and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky agree that now is the right time to step up efforts for peace negotiations and that Russia should also be present at the upcoming peace summit. I definitely welcome this. It also gives other countries the opportunity to become more involved in ending the fighting. In my opinion, the time has come for the Western allies to create a contact group to start this process.” – said the politician.

He said the contact group could include China, India, Turkey and Brazil, where there is reportedly “a growing opinion that a Russian war of aggression could become a burden.” The work of the contact group “could be promising and play an important mediating role,” Mützenich believes.

As reported EADailyformer chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz He has spoken out in favour of stepping up diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Experts believe that Scholz wants to prevent his rating from collapsing.
