The standards established by the World Shipping Organization IMO “bless the toxic business, as on the beaches of South Asia,” said Jensen, founder and managing director of NGO in Brussels. The Convention will not put an end to the damage caused by processing. There will also be “losses of life, limbs, livelihoods and biodiversity.”
Reference information: most ships that will be shot down by world lands in South Asia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and manually at a price. Professional safety does not matter, not only dangerous to health, but also because the environment is contaminated, and the soil and water are burdened. For example, on a notorious beach, old vehicles go to the beach and break up there – harmful substances, such as liquids contaminated with oil and heavy metals, and toxic vapors occur during welding. Most substances are never analyzed more carefully, health consequences are widespread to cancer.
More recently, Shipbring Platform reported that nine workers were killed in South Asia in 2024. Among other things, the Bangladesh chattogram occurred during the abandonment of the oil tanker, which died, which killed six people and were seriously injured by six more.
The term beach does not appear
On June 26, 2025, the Raster Convention on the safe and environmentally friendly processing of ships (abbreviated HKC) will enter into force. It was adopted in 2009 as part of IMO. The states of the contract include the main countries of the processing of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkic, important states -flag, such as Liberia and Malta, as well as Germany.
According to Jensen, HKC does not pay tribute to his requirements. The term beach does not occur in the contract. Nevertheless, this contains the provisions that the validity of fluids and emissions that can harm health or the environment can be avoided when processing delivery.
Nevertheless, a manual retelling on the beach still seems possible. The Shipbring Platform platform found that more than 100 yards in South Asia have already received certificates of conformity. This suggests that they comply with the contract – although they work on the beach. Jensen believes that the provisions are ignored, and “the shipping industry is beneficial from the beach from green washing.”
Professional security is a problem
In addition, according to NGOs, these official contract ships were formally absent to protect employees, such as providing protective equipment and medical services. Investigative journalists and EU reports “showed serious problems regarding employees’ rights.”
The contract also includes detailed rules: therefore, the settlement of the throw should provide personal equipment, such as facial protection and breathing protection and organize security training. The fundamental failure is that the courts of ships criticizes that the contract “does not require an independent examination” from throwing.
Jenssen also complains about the lack of requirements for solving hazardous substances as soon as they left the censcious yard. As an example, she leads: if the country admits that the asbestos plates found on the ship – and this is so – India and Bangladesh – HKC does not conflict with this.
Jenssen contrasts with the regulation of the disposal of EU ships as a more stringent Gong Rules. On the one hand, the 2013 European law applies only to ships with the EU flag, on the other hand, but, on the other hand, throughout the world in the sense that the European shipyard can also be certified by the EU. For example, this happened in Turkey, not yet in South Asia.
The ShIP -Craing platform is: “The Hong Kong Convention will not solve the problem that are connected, but instead serve as the interests of shipping companies that want to avoid paying for real costs for sustainable ship utilization.” Therefore, he threatens to undermine efforts under equal competitive conditions for responsible ship processors.
Jensen sees the entry into force of HKC for almost eight weeks not as about the celebration, but for reforms. Because from this moment changes in the text are possible again.
