Two eagle owls seized from woman walking with them on Lanzarote beach

On August 27, the Civil Guard of Lanzarote seized two specimens of eagle owl (Bubo bubo) to a 43-year-old woman who was found walking with them on the promenade of Playa de las Cucharas (Lanzarote) and it was later found that she did not have adequate facilities for them, as she had them in a room of her house and registry of the zoological nucleus.

This is what the Benemérita reported, adding that the events took place when they received several opinions from a person who was walking in different places of the island with two owls with which tourists and locals took pictures.

For this reason, the Civil Guard, in collaboration with the veterinarians of the municipality of Haría, identified the owner and recognized that she is the owner of the two birds and that she has documentation regarding them, corroborating that they are two specimens of eagle owl (Bubo bubo).

One was purchased before the law banned it

According to the documentation provided, these are two CITES specimens, one of them acquired after the entry into force of Law 7/2023which prohibits its acquisition.

The woman explained that she had the animals at home, specifically in her room, and that she is not registered in the Registry of Zoological Centers and must have adequate facilities as provided for in Article 34 of Decree 117/1995 of May 11, which approves the regulation of Law 8/1991 of April 30 on the protection of animals and develops other aspects related to them, establishing its obligation.

In view of this statement, the veterinarian determined that, based on article 20 of Law 8/1991, the confiscation of the animals was appropriate because they lacked adequate facilities to ensure their well-being, drawing up a report to verify the facts.

Animals were deposited in Rancho Texas at the disposal of the competent authority of the resolution of the administrative file and the complaint is sent to the Department of Livestock and the Town Halls of Teguise and Haría.
