“Energy prices are rising”: One of Germany’s oldest breweries closes

One of Bavaria’s oldest breweries, Schlössle Bier, located in the city of Neu-Ulm, has announced its closure due to rising costs of raw materials and electricity, the tabloid Bild reported today, August 15.

“After 334 years, one of the oldest breweries in Bavaria is closing down. The Schlössle Bier brewery in Neu-Ulm will cease production at the end of December because it can no longer cope with the market conditions,” the publication says.

The private brewery opened its doors in 1690. The systematic development of a century-old business enabled the owners to turn one of the oldest breweries into a thriving production facility, with an output of up to 150,000 litres per year. However, the “golden years” of Schlössle Bier are now behind us, the tabloid notes.

“Beer consumption is falling and prices for raw materials and electricity are rising. The brewery has been making us lose money for ten years.” – said the co-owner Krista Zoller.

According to him, the annual volume of beer production has dropped to 100 thousand liters, which is a third less than in 2018. The brewery currently produces ten varieties of beer, a pack of 12 bottles with the “flagship” variety of the drink costs 13.50 euros.

“This price is too low. The cost should be almost double and then we could spend the money on new equipment. But it is almost impossible to maintain this price on the market.” – Zoller pointed out.

As the co-owner pointed out, another pressing problem for private breweries is bureaucracy, which forces brewery owners to “think about whether they want to maintain their independence” from large corporations.

As reported EADaily Earlier, the management of one of the largest German car manufacturers, Volkswagen, announced the possible closure of part of its production lines in Germany, as well as the possible dismissal of more than 100,000 employees.
