Storm Boris hits Central Europe, killing seven people in Romania, Poland and Austria
Torrential rains, spectacular floods, thousands of evacuations: Storm Boris is wreaking havoc in Central and Eastern Europe and its death toll has risen to at least seven: five in Romania, one in Poland and one in Austria. Several people are also missing.
The storm caused massive power outages, disruptions to transportation networks and mass evacuations of residents in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Romania.
In Romania, the army has deployed ten rescue boats to reach residents trapped in Pechea, a particularly hard-hit village. Camps are being set up to house victims driven from their homes by rising waters.
In Poland, in the town of Glucholazy on the border with the Czech Republic, the Biala Glucholaska River burst its banks, flooding the city centre and riverside neighbourhoods. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the deployment of Starlink satellite internet systems to provide communication in places that have remained isolated.
