A supermoon will illuminate the skies of Israel

Tonight the skies of Israel will be adorned by a rare astronomical phenomenon: a Supermoon. This special event occurs when the Moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.

The Supermoon has already appeared three times this year, but this year’s display will be the last for the next nine years. The next phenomenon of this type is expected to occur only in 2033.

A supermoon is an astronomical phenomenon in which the full or new moon coincides with perigee, the moment when the Moon and Earth are closest. At these times, the Moon appears approximately 14% larger and 30% brighter than at its peak, when it is at its greatest distance from our planet.

There have already been three supermoons in 2024: August 19, September 18 and October 17, and today, November 15, we will be able to see the fourth.

The name “Beaver Moon” comes from the fact that in November beavers complete their preparations for winter and begin to hide in their homes. This full moon is also called the “Icy Moon” or “Icy Moon” because it heralds the onset of cold weather.

Supermoons not only impress with their appearance, they also influence the tides. Due to the Moon’s proximity to Earth, these periods experience higher tides, known as “perigapic tides.” However, for most regions this rise in water level is insignificant and does not pose any danger.
