It can be said without fear of exaggeration that September is the month of the Virgin of Angustias in Grenade. But, during this month, there are two particularly important ones: that of the floral offering to the patron saint of the capital and that of her procession through the main streets of the center. The first of these took place this Sunday, September 15, and gathered, as always, thousands of people.
Although the offering began at 5:30 p.m., from the morning a movement of people was already observed around the basilica, in the Virgin racewhere your image is saved. A transfer of such magnitude could only indicate that it was a great day for many Granadans. And also for many foreigners arriving from other parts of the province and the rest of Andalusia.
At the appointed time, the Archbishop of Granada, Jose Maria Gil Tamayotook the floor to thank Granada for its “renewed affection” towards its patron saint. The Granada residents stressed that on days like this, it is shown that the Granada residents have “their hearts expanded by their love for the Virgin.”
Amidst the cheers of the “Mother of Granada”, the offering began in which the mayor of the city, Marifran Carazo, and the spokespersons of the three political parties represented in the municipal council. The provincial and regional institutions and, in general, all the civil and military authorities of Granada were also represented.
At six o’clock they were dancingThe door“, a popular dance that, although it is no longer heard as much at the local fair or at the festival of the crosses, is not going to be lost because there are many people and associations in Granada that are committed to maintaining the deep-rooted traditions.
“We must support them and be present in important moments for the city,” he said. Rocio DiazMinister of Development of the Andalusian Government, who, although she now resides between Granada and Seville due to her position, has been among the guests of honour for another year.
And of course, the event was open to the thousands of Grenadines who, continuously and until eleven o’clock in the evening, wanted to lay flowers in front of the main façade of the basilica. Individually or on behalf of associations, to thank the patron saint for favors, to ask for more, to remember loved ones who are no longer with us or for a simple demonstration of devotion. After all, it is all of them who are playing the leading role at the moment..
